The Journey From Fat-To-Fit

Ram Kapoor mentioned that his fitness level had gone for a toss since the last ten years. He was 130 Kgs when he decided to take things in his control. Every task needs a tool & for Ram Kapoor the tool which helped him achieve this feat was a diet plan which is in vogue these days, ‘Intermittent Fasting’ or ’16:8 diet plan’. Along with the diet plan, a regular workout helped him catalyse the transformation.

Fasting isn’t a new concept to humanity. People have been practising it for ages as a religious practice. Recent researches have shown that fasting is recommended as one of the measures to control diabetes. Fasting also helps body detox. Intermittent Fasting is a type of fasting that got in the news when Twitter CEO tweeted that he eats one meal a day.

What is Intermittent Fasting or 16:8 Diet Plan?

The Intermittent Fasting (IF) or 16:8 Diet followed by Ram Kapoor has a basic fasting cycle for 16 hours a day where you are restricted from consuming anything except water, tea, or coffee. For the rest of the 8 hours of the window, you can eat regular food preferably at small intervals. This type of diet plan focuses on ‘When to eat?’ rather than ‘What to eat?’ Intermittent Fasting helps reduce calorie intake along with increased metabolism. This combined effect helps in weight loss.

It is suggested that during the 8 hours of the window, it is advisable to consume a balanced diet which will provide all the necessary nutrition. This should include Whole Grains (Complex Carbohydrates), Green Vegetables (Fibres, Calcium, and Vitamins), Pulses/Legumes/Soy (Proteins), and good fats in controlled proportion (Ghee Oil, Cod Liver Oil).

Benefits of Intermittent Fasting Diet

Intermittent Fasting has both Physical and Mental benefits for you viz.:

  1. Instead of borrowing carbohydrate energy, the body burns the unnecessary accumulated fats

  2. Digestion time is cut down by eating less

  3. The body spends more energy on cell regeneration and rejuvenation

Other benefits include effective weight loss according to one of the studies. Other studies show that Intermittent Fasting Diet has helped improved body composition, control Diabetes, reduce cravings and binge eating habits, assist in controlling blood pressure, reduces Total Cholesterol and Triglycerides.

Some Side Effects of Intermittent Fasting

Like every coin has two sides, IF has got some criticism too. People who have a stressful lifestyle may have problems like irritation because of stressed adrenal glands, which in turn may release cortisol.

This would just add fuel to the fire and get you edgy. Low calorie and sudden change in diet intake may make you light-headed and impair insulin secretion. Another major issue you may come across is when you relapse to the regular meals three times a day. This will reverse the story from Fat-to-Fab’ to ‘Fab-to-Flab’.

If you are struggling with weight reduction, want to indulge in a non-restrictive diet, and work on improving your mental health as well, then go for it. Just align with the feedback your body provides.
